It’s a collaboration between photographer Bruce Boys and artist Tharien Smith that managed to encapsulate the beauty of flowers and ice and nature in such a unique way that it would be criminal to just say it’s photos of flowers. It’s art in the purest form and once you see it you’ll immediately want to get some of these photos to hang in your home.
Bruce
Boyd is a genius self-taught photographer living in Cape Town. Most
of the time he works as a freelance commercial photographer but he’s
managed to get his work showcased in several small exhibitions.
Tharien
Smith is Bruce’s girlfriend. She’s an artist and a graphic
designer. She originally graduated from college with a Textile degree
but has spent most of her career working in various different
creative projects. She has designed furnishing fabrics, ceramic
tiles, various decorative graphics. Tharien just loves being a
multi-skilled artist and creating beautiful things in various forms.
What
Tharien and Bruce managed to create in their collaboration is
beautiful in its simplicity yet showcases the complicated things in
nature. They spent a year taking pictures of various flowers frozen
in big blocks of ice
According
to Bruce and Tharien, in the end, their process was to freeze flowers
in plastic containers overnight and then photograph at dawn in the
closest pool or stream or even a puddle.
When
asked why they chose to freeze the flowers they say that ice is just
a unique medium:
“We find it fascinating that ice can preserve something and
at the same time also enhance or distort the beauty of it. For a few
fleeting moments, we are treated to this preserved beauty, the past
encapsulated perfectly, before the ice melts and flowers wilt. “
