instantly look more fresh and bouncy. If you’re travelling or camping at a
music festival – that’s when dry shampoo becomes your best friend. But how much
do we know about dry shampoo apart from it being a lifesaver (it feels that
dramatic sometimes, ok?) in certain situations. Do you know what it’s made of?
Do you know how to use it properly for maximum effect? Can you DIY dry shampoo
at home? Keep reading to find out the answers to these and other questions
below.
What
Is Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is a form of
shampoo that allows you to make your hair look cleaner without the use of
water. The main component in dry shampoo is usually corn starch or rice starch.
These days most dry shampoos come in aerosol cans for the ease of application
and are often scented with fresh, floral or tropical fragrances. There are also
dry shampoos that come in powder form that you can just apply to your head with
your hands or with a brush.
How
To Use Dry Shampoo
Dry is generally used to
remove the appearance of greasy or to add volume to one’s hair. If you’re using
dry shampoo that comes in the aerosol form you should part your hair into
sections add spray into the roots holding the bottle 30-40 cm away from your
hair. Holding the can far enough is actually a very important part of the
process, because the shampoo in liquid form in the can, but it needs that
second or two to transform into dry powder before it hits your hair. So if you
hold the can too close, the dry shampoo will still be a bit wet and that
defeats the purpose and doesn’t deliver the results you expect. If you’re using
the powder version just apply to roots and massage your hair to disperse the
powder evenly. After applying dry shampoo you should also brush your hair to
remove any excess powder.
When
To Use Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo can be used
on so many different occasions. It’s an obvious choice for lazy days and when
your hair just needs a little boost. It’s also a good idea to use dry shampoo
the night before so that you wake up with extra volume in your hair. It can be
used on fresh clean hair to add volume and texture. It’s a great way to add
more grip to your hair when creating an updo and to keep those bobby pins in
place. And shockingly you can even use it on wet hair and it’ll work as mousse.
How
Does Dry Shampoo Work
Dry shampoo works by
soaking up the oils in your hair and therefore making your hair look clean and
non-greasy. However, you should keep in mind that while those oils are soaked
up and your hair looks clean, those oils and starch is still sitting in your
hair might not feel as clean as it looks.
Is
It Okay To Use Dry Shampoo Everyday
You can use dry shampoo
as often as you want but it’s not a true alternative to normal shampoo. Over
time the dry powder will accumulate and form clumps which is just not cute. Dry
shampoo can also be quite drying on the scalp and your hair, so it’s nor
recommended to use it every day if you have a dry and sensitive scalp or your
hair tends to be dry and brittle.
